A Monster Calls is about a boy named Conor who is visited by a monster every night at 12:07. The monster has come to tell him three stories and Conor must tell him a fourth: the truth. The author's purpose was to make the three stories relate to Conor's current situation. I feel the monster was just there to help Conor cope with his mother's situation. The writing of the three stories is very clever because it answered all of Conor's questions, but still made him answer some of his own. The strengths of the book is in the four stories and the very end of the book (Ness 189-204). It ends with you still having unanswered questions that you can only answer yourself. But, the book does have a lot of context clues to help with that. The weakness of the book is more of in the development of the side characters: the grandmother and the dad. Even though there are hardly mentioned in the book, they do affect the development of the main character. I would and already have recommended this book to a classmate. The book is thrilling and really makes you think. Plus, the artwork creates a vivid visual that the reader probably couldn't think of in their head.
